Bias in Social Media

While you watch this video, think about these three questions:

How can social media change the way we view the world?

How can we mitigate (lessen) the effects that social media has on our worldview?

What other aspects in the video really struck a nerve with you?

Independent Work -
Document Your Knowledge

You are about to watch the lecture video and a humorous video on political bias. You have three choices to show you’ve understood the material:

1) Take notes & take a picture of them.
2) Write a 7+ sentence summary/reflection about what you learned.
3) Record a 90+ second audio (or video) reflection.
Once you're done, submit it to Bias Lecture on Schoology.
Bonus Type of Bias:
One extra bit not mentioned in the lecture video: take a look at this photo gallery. Think about what photo you would want to use if you're trying to make president Trump look good, bad, prestigious, or ridiculous.

Practice - Finding Bias in the World

The 24-hour news networks have become the symbols for polarization in America. CNN represents the Democrats on the Left, and Fox News represents the Republicans on the Right. Go to their main page and their political page, and write down the four of the top news stories they're reporting. Then, answer the analysis questions on the bottom to think critically about the information you're being presented.

On the second page, choose one of the types of bias. Then, look through the internet and document the examples you find! We'll report back on our findings next class.
