1st Music Journal - Nationality (Extra Credit)

This an optional assignment for extra credit.
Listen to the first song from Sting & Shaggy's Tiny Desk Concert. It's called "Englishman in New York". Then, write or record a reflection that answers some of the following questions (it can be bullet points, a paragraph, or a video).
  • Where do you see culture in the song?
  • Is there conflict?
  • Where do you see identity?
  • How does the music make you feel?
  • How do the lyrics make you feel?
  • Shaggy wasn't in the original version. How does his presence add to the meaning of the song?

"Englishman in New York" by Sting & Shaggy

Lyrics:
(Shaggy)
Put your hands in the air, one time,
I wanna see you rock it up, now.
Tiny Desk, now where it at?
We gotta rock it one time with the reggae beat.
Early morning reggae style.

(Sting)
I don't take coffee, I take tea, my dear.
I like my toast done on one side.
And you can hear it in my accent when I talk,
I'm an Englishman in New York.
See me walking down Fifth Avenue
A walking cane here at my side
I take it everywhere I walk
I'm an Englishman in New York

(Everybody)
Oh, I'm an alien, I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York
Oh, I'm an alien, I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York

(Shaggy)
I wear my colors in my back pocket,

I got a big _____ in my hand.
And you might notice,
There's a swag anytime I walk.

I'm a Jamaican in New York.

(Everybody)
Oh, I'm an alien, I'm a legal alien

I'm a Jamaican in New York
Oh, I'm an alien, I'm a legal alien
I'm a Jamaican in New York

(Everybody)
Modesty, propriety can lead to notoriety
You could end up as the only one
Gentleness, sobriety are rare in this society
At night a candle's brighter than the sun

(Sting)
Takes more than combat gear to make a man

Takes more than a license for a gun
Confront your enemies, avoid them when you can
A gentleman will walk, but never run.

(Shaggy)
So if you see me walking down the street,
A couple ladies by my side.

Well you should just know,
It's just my swagger & my style,
I'm a Jamaican in New York.
